United Left May Day in Colombo
Report from United Socialist Party (CWI Sri Lanka)
After many years, the 2012 May Day in Sri Lanka was a joint left celebration. This included the new Frontline Socialist Party which has arisen from a major split away from the JVP (People’s Liberation Front).
The United Socialist Party held an independent May Day demonstration starting from Maradana Technical Junction and going to Price Park where the joint rally was held.
USP members from all over the country joined our march – from Jaffna in the far North to Galle in the ‘deep South’. There were Hill Country plantation Tamils and workers from Colombo, Ratnapura and elsewhere as well as members from the East. Some of the main slogans on the banners we carried were for ‘The removal of the Anti Terrorist Act’, ‘Immediate salary increases of Rs12,500 and Rs 7500 daily for the plantation workers’, ‘The right of self-determination for Tamils’, ‘Against imperialism, capitalism, communalism and popular front politics; build the socialist power’.

Build a Mass Force for Socialism!
Clare Doyle – Committee for Workers International
(Speech delivered by Clare Doyle at the FSP convention held in Colombo, Sri Lanka on April 09, 2012)
By Lankasocialist Colombo Correspondent
Sahodaraya/Sahodariya,
It is a great honour for me to be at your founding convention today, representing the Committee for a Workers' International (CWI). It is an organisation with members, groups and parties in 45 countries worldwide.
We have important sections in Brazil and Nigeria, in Venezuela and South Africa, in Israel and the USA. We have elected MPs and councillors in four countries, including Australia. In Europe we are working in 15 different countries and in the former USSR we have built a section in Russia and in Kazakhstan where our comrades are battling against an entrenched and murderous dictatorship.
The CWI is active in seven countries in Asia including some of the largest - China, India and Pakistan (as represented here today by comrade Khalid Bhatti of the Socialist Movement Pakistan) - and some of the smallest, such as Hong Kong and of course, Sri Lanka. The CWI section here - the United Socialist Party - has a proud record of struggle under the leadership of its general secretary, Siritunga Jayasuriya, who is here today.

Top leaders of Frontline Socialist Party abducted on eve of inaugural convention
Appeal for international protests

On the night of 6-7 April, two of the most prominent leaders of a new left party in Sri Lanka were forcibly abducted, just two days before the launching of their party – the Frontline Socialist Party (FSP). There is no trace of them to date and huge anger is rising at the attitude of the Rajapakse regime. It has washed its hands of the incident and the police force has moved extremely slowly to make even a pretence of investigating what happened.
This new party, the FSP, has developed from a substantial split away from the arch nationalist JVP (People’s Liberation Party) whose old leaders remain in the Rajapakse government. It has gone through a long process of ‘self-criticism’ examining the party’s huge mistakes of the past and has resolved to abandon the ‘nationalism’ of the previous period to form a new force for workers’ struggle and socialism.

Repressive regime forced to release abducted activists
Protest in response and release of the two shows potential for united struggle
Published in www.socialistworld.net on 11/04/2012

The brutal government of Sri Lanka (GoSL) is undoubtedly behind the abduction of two activists, Premakumar Gunaratnam and Dimuthu Attygalle of the Frontline Socialist Party. After three days of interrogation at some kind of camp to which they had both been taken separately, they were released yesterday. Dimuthu Attygalle was dropped by her captors from one of the infamous white vans, only when the Sri Lankan police had put Premakumar Gunaratnam onto a plane. He was deported to Australia where his wife and children live.
Mr Gunaratnam and Ms Attygalle were abducted on the eve of the formation of a new party – the Frontline Socialist Party.
