Pettah Shop Workers Support Siritunga
In the last leg of the election campaign of USP candidate Siritunga Jayasuriya a ‘Padayatra’ (Foot March) was held in Pettah, the main shopping district of Colombo. Street after street welcomed Siritunga and his fellow campaigners enthusiastically. Pocket meetings were held in all the junctions of the busy city of Pettah. Many shop workers and owners assured him of their support.
Siritunga roared in the speeches reminding the white van syndrome unleashed by the Rajapakse's regime during the last two years war period in which many Colombo Tamil shop owners were affected. He compared Fonseka and the other capitalist candidate to the fox dressed as a cow.
"api Sirita" (we will surely vote for you) was the general response heard in the campaign.
Railway Commuter Campaign
This campaign in Pettah was preceded by the distribution of election material of USP to the commuters in the main Railway Station of Colombo. Nearly 10,000 leaflets were distributed to the railway commuters.
In the evening, the campaigners held a public meeting near Wellawatta market.
