jan25In the final day of the 2010 presidential election campaign, Siritunga appealed to the people to reject both capitalist candidates. He emphasized, “Time has come to stand for a program that can solve the burning issues of the people in all parts of Sri Lanka.”

USP held several pocket meetings, handed over leaf-lets as apart of the final day election campaign held   in Eheliyagoda area.  Party supporters distributed election material to the voters in the rural areas, many who new Siritunga.  M.K. Piyaratna, the only Socialist PS Member in Eheliyagoda, organized the final day campaign.

Siritunga said, “Mahinda Rajapakse came to power with hundreds of promises to the people. Rajapakse government has failed to fulfill these promises. His government was unable to bring even a nominal solution to the Tamil speaking people in the north and east. They have no real strategy to solve any of the major issues Sri Lanka is facing today. Country’s economy is in a disastrous situation. The condition of the education and health sectors are deteriorating continuously. Media freedom has been destroyed.”

“On the other hand, Fonseka was a major part of the Rajapakse government’s program until past 2-3 months. Fonseka’s promises to establish democracy, solve national question of the Tamil people, fight against corruption etc is nothing, but bogus promises given by a capitalist agent to rob support of the people.”

“It is time to stop this process. All Sinhala, Tamil, and Muslim people in Sri Lanka should get together and vote against both capitalist candidates. Time has come to stand for program, which can solve the issues Sri Lanka is facing today.” Siritunga declared, “USP is fighting for a democratic solution to the Tamil people based on sharing of power. We fight for a good government and a just society. Therefore, voting for USP will be a vote for a better future to all Sri Lankans.”

On way back to Colombo Siritunga had a late evening meeting in Wellawatte, which is predominantly a Tamil area. The meeting was very successful and many USP Tamil supporters listened to Siri and assured their support in the election.  At the end of the meeting, a shop owner, who had never met Siri, but was a regular reader of our paper 'Sentharahai', donated Rs 1000 to the election campaign.
